Biography

Jupp Gauchel was one of the players who made their first appearance with the national team at the 1936 Olympic tournament. Even though Gauchel, a striker, was deemed to be one of the best players in the first game against Luxembourg, he was not considered for the second game against Norway. Until 1942 he won a total of 16 caps scoring 13 goals. He was part of the German squad for the 1938 World Cup in France and scored Germany’s only goal in the 1-1 draw against Switzerland. From the 1946-47 season until 1954 he acted as player-coach for his home team TuS Neuendorf. During the next season he coached the team of FV Engers and, between 1957 and 1959, TuS Neuendorf once again (since 1982 TuS Koblenz).

The close connection between Gauchel and his home team ended when the club and its president were penalized by the football association for keeping a slush fund. Gauchel was accused of being the whistleblower and was expelled from for “conduct damaging to the club.” Nevertheless, after his death a road near the local stadium was named in his honor. Prior to World War II he was working for a wine merchant and, after the conflict, was employed by the state sports lottery of Rhineland-Palatinate. He died from a heart attack at only 46-years-old.
