The West German soccer team at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics was part of the mixed German team that was defeated 2-1 by the Soviet Union in the first round and immediately eliminated. Forward Ernst-Günter Habig scored the German goal. He played for Rapid Köln (1956-57), Viktoria Köln (1957-60 and 1963-65), 1. FC Köln (1960-63) and finally, Fortuna Köln (1965-67). In 1961-62 he helped 1. FC Köln win their first German national title when he scored the second and third goals in their 4-0 win over 1. FC Nürnberg in the final at Berlin.
Habig later coached Fortuna Köln (1976-78), Viktoria Köln (1978-81) and Alemannia Aachen (1981-82). His son Günter also became a soccer player, in the Second German League, and his son-in-law Jens Keller was a well known coach with VfB Stuttgart, FC Schalke 04, Union Berlin. In 2012 Ernst-Günter Habig died from a stroke.
