The West German soccer team at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics was part of the mixed German team that was defeated 2-1 by the Soviet Union in the first round and immediately eliminated. Midfielder and defender Karl Hoffmann played for Fortuna Düsseldorf from 1955-66 having played for VfL Benrath as a youth. Hoffmann won three amateur international caps and later worked for the Düsseldorf traffic company.
