The West German soccer team at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics was part of the mixed German team that was defeated 2-1 by the Soviet Union in the first round and immediately eliminated. Midfielder Rudi Hoffmann played for Viktoria Aschaffenburg (1952–57), VfB Stuttgart (1957–60) and FK Pirmasens (1960–63). With Stuttgart he won the DFB Cup in 1958, winning the final against Fortuna Düsseldorf 4-3 after extra time. He won his first international cap in a 2-1 win over Ireland in 1955 and was one of the reserves for the 1958 World Cup, but stayed at home and was not called upon. He won four more amateur international caps and five more for the B-team. Later he worked as a clerk in a plastics company.
