Midfielder Bernd Nickel was a member of the West German football team beaten 3-2 by East Germany in their deciding second group stage game at the 1972 München home Olympics.
Nickel won 41 West German amateur caps between 1968-72, and scored 18 goals. He also played five matches with the senior West German international team from 1974-76. Domestically, he played 426 matches in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt from 1968-83, and scored 141 goals. With Frankfurt, he won the West German Cup in 1974, 1975 and 1981, and in 1980 Nickel enjoyed his finest moment when Frankfurt beat Borussia Mönchengladbach on away goals to win the UEFA Cup. In 1983 he moved to Young Boys Bern (Switzerland) for one season.
Nickel later turned to golf, and worked as a football consultant and mediator. He also owned a sports goods shop in Herborn until 2012. During his career Nickel became known as one of the most efficient midfielders ever seen in the Bundesliga.
