Forward Christian Schreier was on the West German football team that lost their quarter-final against Yugoslavia 5-2, and finished fifth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. However, he won a bronze medal at the 1988 Games when West Germany beat Italy 3-0 in the third-place match. As a result, the team and all players were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Schreier won just one full international cap, but played with the Olympic team 22 times and scored seven goals.
Domestically, Schreier played with VfL Bochum (1981-84), FC Bayer 04 Leverkusen (1984-91), Fortuna Düsseldorf (1991-92), TuS Paderborn-Neuhaus (1992-94), Rot-Weiß Essen (1994-96), and FC Wegberg-Beeck (1996-98). In total, he played 331 Bundesliga matches and scored 106 goals. His greatest moment came in 1988, when he won the UEFA Cup with Leverkusen by beating Espanyol of Barcelona.
After his active career Schreier became a coach at lower league clubs. Briefly, he had a job as sports manager at SC Paderborn 07 from 2008-09.
