Biography

Right wing Karl Wegele played only for Phönix Karlsruher from 1899-1921, with whom he was German Champion in 1909, defeating Viktoria 89 Berlin. He later became longtime club president. In that era, Wegele was known as one of the best forwards in Germany. Between 1910 and 1914 he earned 15 international caps and scored twice.

Wegele studied mathematics and chemistry at the University of Heidelberg and became a professor. He then worked as a high school teacher in Karlsruhe, and was also known as an engaged sports administrator. In later years he was involved in the education of young pupils in tennis and soccer.
