Defender Bernd Wehmeyer was on the West German football team that lost their quarter-final against Yugoslavia 5-2, and finished fifth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Wehmeyer never won a full international cap, but played with the Olympic team 13 times.
Domestically, Wehmeyer played with Arminia Bielefeld (1971-72, 1975-76), Hannover 96 (1973-75, 1976-78), and Hamburger SV (1978-86). In total, he played 208 Bundesliga matches and scored 10 goals. His greatest moment came in 1983, when he won the European Champions’ Cup with Hamburg beating Juventus 1-0. He also helped Hamburg to win the German Championship in 1979, 1982, and 1983. In 1980, Hamburg lost the final of the European Champions’ Cup when beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest. After his active career Wehmeyer became sports manager at Hamburg and in 1998 he was promoted to club manager.
