Biography

Ghanian football forward Abukari Gariba played for Asante Kotoko for 12 consecutive years from 1962 to 1974 in the Ghana Premier League. Gariba also represented the national football team, known as the Black Stars, playing for them at two Olympic Games. Ghana finished in ninth place at the 1968 Mexico City Games following two draws and a loss in the group stage. Their only defeat was a 5–3 loss to Israel, which resulted in Gariba being suspended by FIFA for one year after he attacked the referee at the end of the game. He returned to the Olympics for the 1972 München Games, but Ghana lost all three of their group games to finish in joint-last place in the tournament.

In domestic football Gariba was part of the Asante Kotoko team that won the 1970 African Cup of Champions Clubs tournament. He scored a goal in each of the home and away legs of the two-match final against the Congolese team TP Englebert. He played in the tournament the following year scoring three goals, including one in the final, with Asante Kotoko finishing as runners-up.
