János Biri was the goalkeeper of Kispesti AC between 1920 and 1925 and then played for the Italian side AC Padova for two years. Between 1923-28, he was selected for the national team five times, four times as a player for Kispest. At the 1924 Olympics Bir was the Hungarian reserve goalkeeper. Biri returned to Hungary in 1927 and played for several Hungarian teams: Hungária, Budai 33, Sabaria, Phoebus, and finally III. kerület. In 1933, he spent a year at Amiens in France, then moved to Portuguese Boavista (1934-37) for three years. In 1937 he finished his active career with the Swiss Young Boys team in order to start a successful career as a trainer.
Biri settled in Portugal and trained no less than 10 club teams, including Academico de Porto, Estoril, Guimaraes, Setubal, and Academica Coimbra; however, he achieved his biggest success with Benfica, with whom he was a three-time champion (1942-43, 1945) and three-time cup winner (1940, 1943-44). Biri died in Portugal in 1983.
