Károly Fatér started his sporting career in the late 50s, with the youth team of Újpest. He later joined Tipográfia and Pénzügyőr. Between 1963 and 1974 Fatér played 199 league games with his only first division affiliation, Csepel SC. He finished his career in the second division, in the colors of Budafok in the 1974/75 season.
As his greatest success, Fatér was a member of the Hungarian football team that won gold at the 1968 Olympics, as he played goal for Hungary in all six matches. Besides his Olympic appearance Fatér played one game for the national team on 4 May 1968, in a 2-0 match against the Soviet Union in Budapest.
After his career as an athlete, Károly Fatér worked as a coach at Tipográfia, at Csepel, and as a goalkeeper coach for the women’s youth national team. He also ran a delicatessen in Budapest. In recognition of his merits, he received the Pro Urbe Budapest Award in 2012.
