Luigi Barbesino’s first match for the national team was against Sweden at the 1912 Olympics. At that time, he was only 18 years, 2 months old, one of the youngest Italian team footballers in history. He played in five matches with the Azzurri, with one goal, against Switzerland in May 1914. In that year he won his only Italian title with Casale. Barbesino was later a top coach for Legnano FC in 1928-29 (winner of the “Serie B” championship) and in the 1930s with Roma and Venezia. He died in April of 1941 in the Sicily channel (probably near the city of Sciacca) when he and other five soldiers disappeared while aboard a reconnaissance aircraft – their bodies were never found.
