A much-travelled striker, Maurizio Iorio played for 12 different Italian clubs and his first major piece of silverware came in the 1982/83 season, when he won Serie A with A. S. Roma. He was also in the Internazionale squad that won the UEFA Cup in 1991, although he did not play in the first leg against Roma, and was an unused substitute in the second leg.
Iorio had an outstanding talent as a youngster, and made up for his lack of height with exceptional pace, dribbling and all-round technical ability. However, the other side of the coin showed he was inconsistent, and had a lower-than-average work rate on the field. Off the field he had a lifestyle not consistent with that of a top-class footballer.
Iorio played in all six of Italy’s matches at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics when Italy finished fourth. Unfortunately, he never won a senior cap.
