A midfielder, Gianluca Sordo spent eight years (1991-98) in Serie A with Torino, A.C. Milan, Reggiana and Bari. He made the most appearances for Torino (117) and won the Italian Cup with them in 1993. The previous year, Torino lost on away goals to Ajax of Amsterdam in the final of the UEFA Cup. Sordo hit the bar in the last minute of the second leg, which cost the Italians a chance of their first major European trophy. Sordo did eventually win a European trophy, when he was part of the Milan team that won the UEFA Super Cup in 1994. He won the Italian Super Cup that same year and, also with Milan, the Serie A title in 1996.
Sordo scored two goals in 23 appearances for the Italian under-21 side, and was a member of the team that won the 1992 European Under-21 Championship, and played in three games as Italy reached the quarter-final of the Barcelona Olympics that same year.
