Roberto Tricella was a defender, often used as a sweeper, and played for the Italian clubs Internazionale, Hellas Verona, Juventus and Bologna. Having won the Italian Cup with Inter in 1978, he won Serie B in 1982 and then Serie A in 1985 with Verona. He then enjoyed a UEFA Cup/Italian Cup double with Juventus in 1990.
Having played in all six of Italy’s games at the 1984 Olympics, he went on to win 11 full Italian caps up to 1987. He was a member of Enzo Bearzot’s 1986 FIFA World Cup squad but did not play. After the appointment of Bearzot’s successor, Azelio Vicini, Tricella failed to hold down a regular place in the team due to the presence of another Olympian Franco Baresi.
