Biography

Because of his skill and agility, Beniamino Vignola was compared to Italian legend Gianni Rivera as a youngster. Vignola started his career at Hallas Verona and joined Juventus from Avellino in 1983. He was used as a substitute at first, but then broke into the starting line-up on a regular basis and helped Juve win Serie A and the UEFA Cup-winners’ Cup in the 1983/84 season.

He scored one goal and set up Boniek’s winner in the Cup-winners’ Cup final win against Porto in Basel. The following season he won the European Super Cup with Juventus, and was part of the European Cup victory over Liverpool, remembered largely for the death of 39 people before the start of the match at the Heysel Stadium, Bruxelles in 1985.

Vignola played in five matches for Italy at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and scored two goals, as Italy finished fourth. He never won a senior Italian cap. Vignola retired in 1991 with 347 club appearances, and 47 goals to his credit.
