Youssef Zawawi played football at the 1972 München Olympics. He first played for the junior national team at the 1969 Asian Youth Championships. He played domestically for various clubs, including Kelantan, Pahang, and Prisons, helping Kelantan to a runner-up finish at the 1970 Malaysia Cup. Later that year he joined Pirons and helped them win the FAM Cup, at the time the leading inter-state knockout tournament in Malaysia, in 1970, 1971, and 1973. He later transferred to Pahang and played with them until his 1981 retirement.
Internationally, Zawawi won bronze at the 1974 Asian Games, and won two Southeast Asian Games gold medals in 1971 and 1975. He played for Malaysia in their winning Merdeka Tournament campaigns in 1971 and 1974. He also helped to win the 1971 South Vietnam Republic Day Cup.
