Sjaak Alberts commenced his football career as a youth player for Gelria in Velp. Switching to Vitesse, he débuted with the first team there in 1942. Playing for the Arnhem side for over a decade, he helped the team win three championships in the Second Division East (1944, 1946, 1950), and one in the First Division B (1953). The latter title earned Vitesse a spot in the play-off pool for the Dutch championship, which they failed to win, marking Alberts’ final competitive matches. Already selected for the Dutch B side in 1947, Alberts was a non-playing substitute for the 1948 Olympics. Four years later, he played all of his five international matches, including the 1-5 loss in Helsinki at the hands of Brazil.
