A midfielder, Mathijs Clavan got his name at age 15, named after Mickey Mouse, as he was supposedly as hard to catch as “a mouse in a room full of cats”. He played for ADO Den Haag from 1943 on, but switched to Den Haag ‘54 (later Holland Sport) when the Dutch League turned professional in 1954. He returned to ADO (by then also a professional team) in 1956, and helped them achieve promotion to the top layer of Dutch football in 1957, and claim the cup in 1959 and 1963. First selected for the national team in 1948, Clavan travelled to London for the Olympics but did not actually play, although he did compete in the 5-1 loss to Brazil at the 1952 Games. He was a fixture on the team through around 1955, after which he was only rarely called up. He had a revival in the 1960s, winning three more caps for a total of 27 (scoring 7 goals). After his playing career, Clavan worked as a coach for amateur side Ooievaars.
