Via CVV Zwervers (Capelle aan den IJssel) Terlouw started playing for DCV (Krimpen aan den IJssel). Despite being a second division team, his playing earned him a spot in the national team, where he would play 34 matches, including 5 as a captain. Rinus Terlouw played for Sparta from 1949, with whom he reached the play-off pool for the title in 1956 (placing fourth and last). Terlouw, known as a rock-solid defender, played with the team until 1958, after which he became a trainer for DCV. In 1965, he decided to break with his football past, throwing out all his scrapbooks, awards, etc. to return to the reformed church, where he served as a deacon between 1975 and 1981. He passed away in 1992, having suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for several years.
