Ragnar Hvidsten started his football career with the local club IL Runar in Sandefjord in 1945, but later joined Sandefjord BK in 1949 in the top Norwegian football league. In 1950 the speedy right wing made his national debut for Norway, and played 21 international matches, scoring 2 goals between 1950 and 1955. In 1952 he transferred to the Oslo club Skeid, playing 20 matches and scoring 8 goals before returning to Sandefjord BK in 1953. In total he played 93 matches and scored 11 goals for his home town club.
In 1955 Hvidsten had a short spell with the English amateur club Hendon, playing for the team in the 1955 FA Amateur Cup final, the first Norwegian to do so. While playing for Skeid in 1952, he was selected for the Norwegian Olympic team in the Helsinki Olympics, playing in Norway’s only match in the tournament against Sweden, which ended with a clear victory for the Swedes, 4-1. Hvidsten worked in administration for the ship company Jahre Line in Sandefjord until his retirement.
