Biography

Herbert Taylor, better known as “Dick”, was an outstanding footballer and was one of the early members of the Worthing FC. He joined the club in 1889 and became a prolific goalscorer. His son, also named Herbert but known as “Joey”, also played for Worthing and was regarded as one of the finest men ever to play for them. Joey was also a fine cricketer for Worthing CC, but sadly lost his life at Gallipoli in 1915.

Dick Taylor was a house painter by trade and was also a volunteer fireman with the Worthing Fire Brigade. He was a member of their crew at the 1900 Olympics and, after coming first in the English section of the life-saving event, they went through to the international event, which they won ahead of Leyton. One of Taylor’s proudest moments was in receiving the Freedom of the City of Paris after the Great Exhibition.
