A member of the Worthing Fire Brigade, Daniel Burr was in their team that finished fourth in the Maneuvering, International, British Firefighters event at the 1900 Paris Olympics. Burr was a self-employed mechanical engineer and inventor. In 1902 he obtained an international patent for an improved fire escape device, which proved to be a very successful invention that was used by many fire brigades.
