Yang Song-Guk was the only player from the 1976 North Korea football squad who attended the World Cup in England 10 years earlier. In that tournament he played the two most important matches for his national team. On 19 July in Middlesbrough North Korea surprisingly defeated Italy, eliminating it from the World Cup. Four days later in Liverpool in the quarter-final match he scored the third goal against Portugal, putting North Korea ahead 3-0 although Portugal came back to win 5-3.
