Alkibiades entered seven chariots in the tethrippon in 416 BCE, and finished first, second, and fourth. He was wealthy and after his victory he held a large banquet for the spectators at Olympia. The defending champion, Likhas, entered chariots in 416 BCE for Thebes, as Spartan athletes were banned from Olympia beginning in that year. Likhas actually won his event, but the judges ruled against the victory since an Olympic athlete was expected to represent his native city-state. A brief war ensued between Sparta and Elis.
