In his victory in 564 BCE, Arrikhion was placed in a strangle hold by his opponent (from Arkadia). To spur him on, his trainer yelled out, “What a beautiful funeral not to give up at Olympia.” To loosen the strangle hold, Arrikhion grabbed his opponent’s ankle and dislocated it. His opponent raised his hand to signal withdrawal, but as he did this, Arrikhion died. Arrikhion was declared the winner posthumously as his opponent had withdrawn.
