Kallias was often known as Kallias II to distinguish him from his grandfather, Kallias I, and grandson, Kallias III, who was best known for having squandered the family fortune.
Kallias II owned teams that won tethrippon crowns in 500 and 492 BCE and was _periodonikes_, also winning four titles at Nemea, five at Isthmia, and twice at Pythia. He was a statesman, soldier, and diplomat and was one of the wealthiest men in Athina. He fought at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE.
A supporter of Perikles, the leader of Athina, Kallias II was made a diplomat and ambassador for Athina. In this role he went to Susa in Persia to conclude a peace treaty with Artaxerxes I that became known as the Peace of Kallias. However, the effort appears not to have been successful, and after this trip he returned to Athina and rumors note that he was indicted for high treason and fined fifty talents. However, the later years of his life are murky.
