Kallippos won this event by bribing his rivals. Although he was fined for the offense, once it was discovered, he hired an Athenian lawyer, Hyperides, to fight the charges. However, the Elean ruling council persisted in maintaining the fine, but Kallippos refused to pay it. The Athenians then began a boycott of the Olympic Games, which only ended when the Delphic Oracle convinced the Athenians to pay Kallippos’ fine and return to Olympia.
