Barbara Cunningham represented Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Prior to the games, the clothing manufacturer Fletcher Jones & Staff were awarded the contract to outfit the Australian women’s team for the Olympics. The company asked Cunningham to model the first skirt that they had produced.
After the Olympics, she founded the Cheltenham Youth Club. A talented and influential gymnast in Australia, Cunningham was bestowed with the Athlete Award of Distinction and was later inducted into the Athlete Roll of Honour. In 1991, she was made a life member of Gymnastics Victoria.
