Originally, Great Britain was not sending a gymnastics team to the 1936 Berlin Olympics but just five weeks before the scheduled start of the competition, they decided to send a women’s team and hastily arranged trials at Stamford Hill, London. On receiving notice of her selection, London’s Brenda Crowe, the youngest member of the squad at 23 years and 13 days, responded by saying “What have I let myself in for?” It was a daunting task for the British team whose routine was disrupted by an unruly crowd, dissenting at some poor judging decisions, and Great Britain finished last of eight. By occupation, Crowe worked in the Money Order Department of the Post Office.
