Biography

One of four Saltaire Gym Club members to attend the 1948 Olympics, Audrey Rennard was, at the age of 15, the youngest member of the Great Britain women’s gymnastics squad. Rennard originally played netball at school, before a friend suggested she go to the Saltaire Ladies Gym Club, and it was there that she was coached to Olympic standard by 1928 Olympian Carrie Pollard (née Pickles). Rennard was the daughter of a wealthy Bradford mill owner who was uniquely at that time a car owner, and could give his daughter the luxury of being driven to gymnastic competitions. Rennard finished ninth in the all-round team competition at the 1948 Olympics, and four years later was selected as a non-travelling reserve for the Helsinki Games. She later trained local gymnasts, and ran keep-fit classes.
