Erna Bürger, a German gymnast from Eberswalde, won the gold medal with the German team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The eight exercises were held outdoors in front of 20,000 spectators at Dietrich Eckart Stage, nowadays called Waldbühne. Individually she was placed second behind her team-mate Trudi Meyer, but no medals were awarded for the individual event.
