Margit Nagy started her gymnastics career with Debreceni Torna Egylet (DTE) at the age of 11. In 1937 and 1947, she was Hungarian champion on the uneven bars. At the age of 14 she was selected for the Hungarian national team and had just turned 15 when she won bronze in the women’s team event at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
After World War II, Nagy-Sándor successfully competed for the London Olympic team and won a silver medal in the team event. In 1949, she placed second with the team at the Universiade, but in 1952, due to an injury, she was unable to attend the Helsinki Olympics. When the Minister of the Interior terminated DTE and directed its leading competitors to Budapest Dózsa, Nagy-Sándor retired, along with several of her teammates.
From 1948 Nagy-Sándor coached the Debrecen Railway Sports Association. In 1960, she earned a degree in coaching from the Institute of Sports Management and Coaching, and in addition, she worked at MÁV (Hungarian Railways) in Debrecen until her retirement. In 1995 Margit Nagy-Sándor was elected an honorary citizen of Debrecen.
