Lenie Gerriesten took up gymnastics at an early age, but World War II prevented international competitions during many of her prime years. Once the conflict ended, however, she took part in the team all-around event at the 1948 London Olympics, where she was fifth with the Dutch team. Four years later, at the Helsinki Games, the women could compete individually, and Gerriesten had her best finish of 45th on the balance beam, while placing 14th and joint-sixth in the team all-around and portable apparatus respectively. Domestically, she won five national titles between 1953 and 1956.
Following her retirement from active competition, Gerriesten remained active in coaching and refereeing within her sport. Most notably, she was a member of the jury at the 1972, 1976, and 1980 Olympic Games. In 1994 she was made a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau for her services to gymnastics.
