One year later, he was a member of the Finnish gymnastics team that won silver behind Norway in the free system at the 1912 Olympic Games. Sammallahti was a gymnastics teacher at schools in Kemi (1912-19) and Seinäjoki (1919). From1921 until his retirement in 1947, he worked as a gymnastics and health teacher at Kokkola Co-educational High School. In addition, he was sports instructor of the Central North School District (1924-30), Kokkola city councillor (1931-33) and a member of various social and civic committees. During the interwar period, he made study trips to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Estonia.

In 1918, Sammallahti volunteered to join the Whites’ paramilitary Civil Guard during the Finnish Civil War, serving in the Kokkola region of Ostrobothnia. After the end of the civil war, he continued to serve in the Kokkola Protection Corps until its abolition in 1944 after the armistice with the Soviet Union.
