Eberhard Schulz dedicated his life to volleyball, first as a player, and then as a referee. Schulz had the dual role of captain and coach of the West German national team at the 1956 Volleyball World Championship in Paris. During his career he played in 47 international matches. He then switched his focus from playing to officiating, going on to referee in more than 340 matches, including games at the European Championships and the World Cup. In 1972 Schulz had the honour of refereeing in matches at his home Olympics in München. Two years later he officiated in games in the newly-formed Bundesliga until his retirement in 1987. In recognition of his contributions he was honoured by the Northwest German Volleyball Association, the German Volleyball Association, and the LandesSportBund.
