Pedro Hernández was in his mid-teens when he began his career as a basketball referee in 1969. Just a few years later Hernández was only 19-years-old when he became the youngest referee to officiate a match in the top tier of Spanish basketball. Over the next 13 seasons he officiated Copa del Rey finals, a European Cup final, and matches at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He was 32-years-old when he retired as a referee, before serving as the President of the La Palma Island Referees Federation. Hernández was honoured with the Gold Medal of La Palma and the Bronze Medal for Sporting Merit by the Spanish National Sports Council.
