William Frederick Barrell was a member of the Orion Gymnastics Club in the 1900s when he was selected to represent Great Britain at the 1908 Olympics in the gymnastics team event. An accountant by profession, he served as a captain in the Army pay department, before embarking on a long career in the Royal Air Force, and in 1940 was promoted to temporary squadron leader. Barrell remained involved in RAF athletics affairs up to the mid-1930s.
