The captain of the 1948 Olympic British gymnastics team, Manchester labourer Jack Flaherty took part in the individual and team competition, with a best finish of 30th (out of 121 starters) in the horizontal bars. He finished third in the 1934 national championship at London’s Northampton Institute, and went on to win the title in 1938. After his Olympic appearance, Flaherty coached youngsters in the northeast of England, and also became a gymnastics judge. In 1952, he was first reserve for the British Olympic team.
