J. W. Jones was a member of the Bradford All Saints’ Gymnasium through the 1890s and 1900s. He was noted for his great prowess in rope climbing, winning the Yorkshire Championship in the event five times, earning him the title of “the doyen of rope-climbing” as crowned by a local newspaper. He was later chosen as a member of the 1908 British gymnastics team to compete at the Olympic Games, one of at least 15 gymnasts from Yorkshire. Following the Olympics, he remained active in the gymnastics scene until 1909.
