Biography

W. Manning was a member of the famous Northampton Institute under the guidance of instructor Rudolf Oberholzer, father of the 1908 individual all-round bronze medallist Henry Oberholzer. At the 1900 German Gymnastic Society (GGS) Championship, Manning finished third behind two other Northampton Institute men, Edward Richardson and H. Hull. Manning was third again in 1903 and in 1904 was selected to represent England in the International Championship against Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.

Manning finished fourth again at the GGS Championship in 1907, was selected for the London Olympics the following year, and in 1909 finished second to Sam Hodgetts in the English National Championships. He was also the leading scorer in that year’s International Championships.
