Ronald McLean competed in the 1912 Olympics at Stockholm and won a team bronze medal. At Antwerpen in 1920, however, the British team finished a disappointing fifth, and last. McLean served on the Amateur Gymnastics Association, and was appointed to the executive committee in 1912. At the time he was a member of the German Gymnastic Society, but later joined the crack Northampton Polytechnic Institute team.
