Alfred Pinner was one of two members of the East Anglian Gymnastics Association, along with A. E. Page, to be selected for the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics. Unfortunately, they could do nothing to prevent the British squad from finishing fifth and last in the team event.
Pinner was originally a carpenter’s apprentice in Ipswich, until serving as a private with the 4th Suffolk Regiment in World War I. He was awarded the Victory, and British medals, and the 1914 Star. After the War, Pinner moved to the London area, and ran a dyers and dry cleaning business in Surrey with his wife Rhoda, before eventually returning to Ipswich.
