Irven Robertshaw was born in Thornton, West Yorkshire where he also spent his early years. Along with his brother Fred, he was a member of the Brighouse Church Gymnasium and active in various gymnastics events throughout the 1900s. He was chosen as a member of the British gymnastics delegation for the 1908 London Olympics as a participant in the team event, placing eighth with 196 points. A stonemason by profession, Robertshaw continued to reside in West Yorkshire until his death in 1970.
