John Thomas Simpson was one of three members of the Halifax Recreative Evening School (RES) to compete at the 1908 Olympics. Edgar Dyson and E. Parsons were the others. Simpson won representative honours with the Bradford District in the Yorkshire Inter-District Championships in 1909, and that same year came third in the Bradford & District section of the Yorkshire Gymnastic Championships in the rope climbing event.
