Arthur Southern was a member of the Hackney-based Orion Club, one of oldest gymnastic cubs in Britain, having been formed in 1868. His gymnastic career was not an outstanding one, but Southern was called into the Great Britain squad for the 1912 Stockholm Olympics and won a team bronze medal. The son of a London hotel proprietor, Southern was the company secretary of a public company, before becoming a shopkeeper at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
