In 1937, Alec Wales of the Northampton Polytechnic Institute (London) ended Arthur Whitford’s nine-year reign as British gymnastics champion. Wales was runner-up the following year and third in 1939, when Whitford won his record 10th title. That year, Wales was also a member of the Northampton team that won the British men’s team title. He won a second team title with the Swansea YMCA team in 1948. After ending his active career, Wales became a gymnastics coach.
