Biography

Innozenz Stangl, a German gymnast from München, won the gold medal with the German team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The twelve exercises were held outdoors in front of 20,000 spectators at Dietrich Eckart Stage, nowadays called Waldbühne. Individually his best finish was fourth in the horizontal bar and he finished 20th in the all-around competition. His brother Johann also was a gymnast at that the time and was a substitute at the Berlin Games. In 1937 Innozenz was second in the German All-Round Championship and ten years later he eventually captured the title.

During World War II Stangl became a member of the Nazi Party NSDAP and the SA. He worked as a sports teacher until he was recruited for the Wehrmacht. In 1945 he was captured by the Americans first, and then by the Russians, but fled to Czechoslovakia and back home by foot. After the war he returned to working as a sports teacher.
