Matthias Volz, a German gymnast from Schwabach, won the gold medal with the German team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The twelve exercises were held outdoors in front of 20,000 spectators at Dietrich Eckart Stage, nowadays called Waldbühne. Individually he won two bronze medals in the horse vault and the rings, and finished seventh in the all-around. Volz was one of the actors in the Leni Riefenstahl propagandistic film Olympia about the Berlin Games.
