Gábor Kecskeméti started his sports career in gymnastics and athletics as a high school student. He was nominated to the youth national team in athletics but became a successful gymnast. Between 1932 and 1939 he competed as a TFSE (Testnevelési Főiskola Sport Egylet) gymnast and won the national team championship title four times and earned nine international caps. As a member of the Hungarian team, he finished fifth at the 1934 World Championship, won the Universiade in 1935, and finished seventh at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. His successful career ended in 1939 after an injury.
Kecskeméti was one of the Hungarian gymnastic coaches at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. In 1934, he graduated as a teacher of physical education, and from 1941 until his retirement, he taught at Békés Grammar School. Kecskeméti was later the county’s high school physical education superintendent. After his death in 1982, the first Gábor Kecskeméti Gymnastics Memorial Competition was organized.
